Russian American History month in New York state

There are already 20 events, organized by as many organizations, celebrating the 3rd "Russian American History Month", posted on the official website of the month.

The main objective is to provide learning opportunities for the public , especially students in schools and universities, that draw attention to the history of  Russian Americans and the productive role they have played and continue to play, in the history of the United States.

In early 2012, representatives of a coalition of organizations travelled to Albany to request the NYS Senate to pass a resolution asking for the establishment of  “Russian American History Month.”  NYS Senator Adriano Espaillat, whose district includes a large number of Russian Americans, rose to deliver a warm and eloquent speech commending the Russian American community for its many accomplishments and significant contributions to his State and his Nation and offered the resolution.  It passed without objection and kicked off a month of events and activities throughout the state.

In 2013 A delegation of the 50 member “Coalition" again led by its chairman Dr. Olga Zatsepina, traveled to Albany, capitol of New York State, to witness the submission of another Senate resolution reaffirming the celebration of the month.

In a commendable spirit of  bi-partisanship, Democrat Espaillat from Manhattan who again sponsored the resolution was joined as co-sponsors by Republican Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos, and Senators Golden and Bonacic, both of whom also co-sponsored the resolution last year, and Senator Simcha Felder of Brooklyn. Again the resolution passed without objection and the tradition of  "Russian American History Month" in NYS was firmly established.

Among  the high points of  this year's events is the celebrated  “Spring Ball” of the Russian Nobility Association in America, first held in 1936, to take place May 9, 2014. The 8th annual  "Children's Festival of Russian Culture" showcasing Children’s Folk Ensembles providing a taste of centuries old Russian music & dance. The event includes groups from several US states as well as countries outside the US. The "Cherry Orchard Festival" will help celebrate the month with a number of Russian inspired events like the Vladimir Spivakov and Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra May 18, and the Concert оf  Young Musicians  of  the Spivakov International Charity Foundation on May 14.
