Russkiy Mir Foundation: Culture and Time

On November 3, 2014, on the eve of the National Unity Day, the 8th Russkiy Mir (Russian World) Assembly will be held in Sochi. The theme of the Assembly will be “Culture and Time.”

This year, which was dubbed the “Year of Culture” by Russia's President, representatives of Russian and foreign companies from dozens of countries will gather to discuss actual problems in the Russian world in the capital of the past Winter Olympic Games. The topics of discussion on the roundtables will be “The Law of the Russian language”, “Culture of the Russian language in the 21st century”, “Ukraine”, “Slavophilism and Westernism today”, “Modern Russian Language Textbooks: How should They Look?”, “Russian Schooling Abroad: Experience, Problems, and Prospects”, and “The Prisoner of the Caucasus: the Unknown Lermontov.”

The 8th Russkiy Mir Foundation Assembly will be held on the grounds of the Winter Theatre and the Russian International Olympic University (Sochi).

The event will be attended by prominent political and public figures, heads of ministries and departments, representatives of compatriot associations, professors and school teachers, textbook authors, scientists, writers, diplomats, clergy, cultural studies scholars, and journalists.

On the eve of the Assembly, from November 1-2, 2014, with the support of the Russkiy Mir Foundation and with the participation of the Russian Academy of Education and the Russian Society of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (ROPRYAL), the Russkiy Mir “Russian Language in the Modern school system” pedagogical forum will be held in Sochi, as will the 4th ROPRYAL Congress entitled “The Dynamics of Linguistic and Cultural Processes in Contemporary Russia.”

The purpose of the forum is the study and dissemination of advanced experience in the teaching of the Russian language (native and non-native varieties) and literature and familiarizing children and young people with reading, with the goal of instilling in them a love and respect for the Russian language. Throughout this event, 300 teachers from all over Russia will participate, and a delegation of specialists in Russian philology has been invited from near and far abroad.
