Russians will be able to study abroad for free

Russian students will be able to study abroad for free under a new program approved on June 20 by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

The Global Education program, which will fund its first group of students starting this fall, will pay the tuition of Russian students who are accepted for graduate study at select foreign universities if the students agree to work for a Russian company for a minimum of three years. The list of acceptable universities includes 150 schools in 25 countries. To qualify for the program, applicants must already have a bachelor’s degree and have applied and been accepted into a foreign university on the list. The program was developed by Russia’s Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI).

“The aim of this program is for Russia to adopt the best foreign practices in the field of education,” said Andrei Nikitin, the head of ASI.

More than 4 billion rubles ($118 million) have already been allocated to cover the costs of the first three years of the program.

The program allows qualified Russian students to attend foreign universities for the same price they would pay for Russian universities. Unlike in most Western countries, higher education in Russia is free for students who receive the required score on the entrance exam.
