In 2015 the holdings of Russia’s largest libraries will become available on smartphones and tablets. It will be possible to use them for free, and will have only to register on a special mobile application for the iOS and Android platforms.
The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation plans to open access to more than 6 million items from the collections of the National E-Library Project. The Russian State Library, the Russian National Library, the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library, and the Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology are taking part in the project.
Users will not only be able to read free of charge, but also to save texts and images for viewing online. The first items to be made available will be Russian classics and historical documents and dissertations, since many archived books and documents from the time of the Russian Empire are currently for sale on pirate sites.
It will cost 4.4 million rubles ($120,000) to develop the mobile application.
