Russia stands for a nuclear-free Korean peninsula, and to ensure this, a comprehensive agreement is needed that is acceptable to all parties, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meeting in Kuala Lumpur on August 5.
“Our aim is to ensure its [Korean Peninsula's] non-nuclear status by arriving at an agreement that is acceptable to everyone,” Lavrov was quoted by Sputnik News as saying, during a meeting with his North Korean counterpart Lee Yong Soo. “We want the security of all the countries in the region and, of course, that of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, to be firmly ensured so that the legitimate interests of North Korea are respected by everyone, without exception.”
Lavrov will take part in the ASEAN-Russia Ministerial Meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum. He is also expected to meet U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on the sidelines of the meeting.
